Health Navigator Updates Diagnostic Platform to Address Zika Virus

Health Navigator Inc. announced today that it has added a new Zika virus aftercare instruction topic and integrated the disease and its clinical information into the Health Navigator diagnostic engine. The enhancements come on the heels of the declaration from the World Health Organization (WHO) that Zika virus is now considered a global public health emergency.

According to David Thompson, MD, founder and CEO of Health Navigator, the enhancements show the agility, flexibility, and clinical power of the platform. The new aftercare instruction topic supports telemedicine doctors by providing a script for reassuring and teaching people, and delivering patient-specific education for patient portals. Consistent with health literacy principles, the topic is written in plain language at a 6th grade reading level.

The Health Navigator’s aftercare instruction topic on Zika virus includes information about home treatment options, details about the virus, tips for avoiding mosquito bites, and links to additional resources. This can be found online at

“By making this information available on our website and incorporating the clinical information into our database and diagnostic engine for health care personnel, we hope to improve patient education and awareness of the Zika virus and its primary symptoms, while directing people to the right care, at the right time,” said Thompson.

According to the WHO, more than 1.5 million Brazilians have been infected with the Zika virus since early 2015, and there have also been outbreaks in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and South America. There currently is no vaccine for the Zika virus, and the WHO is encouraging all people, especially pregnant women, to avoid infected areas.

The Health Navigator decision support platform fosters a faster, more accurate clinical e-Health process by using natural language processing technology to translate coded chief complaints from patients, identifying the most acute problems, providing potential diagnoses, communicating treatment options, and directing people to information and resources about their condition. Currently available Health Navigator aftercare instructions address more than 300 adult and pediatric topics.
