SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Fundraising has begun to help United Healthcare Workers-West members fight unprecedented attacks by Andy Stern and Anna Burger, Service Employees International Union President and Secretary-Treasurer.
"A Salute to Union Democracy" honoring the 150,000 members of SEIU United Health Care Workers-West and their President, Sal Rosselli, takes place Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 5:30 to 7:30 at the Julia Morgan Ballroom, Merchants Exchange Building, 465 California Street in San Francisco. It is sponsored by a committee led by John Burton, Dolores Huerta, Aaron Peskin, Clint Reilly and the Fund for Union Democracy and Reform.
UHW members are advocating reforms to make SEIU more democratic and accountable to its members. They are fighting for a real voice in decisions affecting their lives, patients they serve and their union.
Stern and Burger head the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), parent union of SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West. Their policies exclude rank and file member involvement through secret, behind the scene deals and a top-down, big business unionism.
Recently Stern and Burger failed in a lawsuit against Rosselli and members of United Healthcare Workers-West. U.S. District Court Judge John F. Walter ruled SEIU brought no valid legal claim against United Healthcare Workers-West (UHW) members and dismissed the case without need for a hearing.
Now, Stern wants SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West (UHW) placed in trusteeship for the very reasons the Federal court ruled there was no cause of action. Under trusteeship, union members lose all control of their union. Should Stern succeed, United Health Care Workers policies would cease to exist.
SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West (UHW) is California's most powerful
political voice for worker rights and healthcare reform. Over 50,000
contribute financially on a monthly basis to support candidates and issues
