Health Care Solutions Provider Payformance Health Standardizes on PGP Encryption for Data Security

Scalable PGP Encryption Platform Protects Sensitive Customer Health Care

Data on Laptops and Desktops

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise data protection, today announced that Payformance Health, a division of the Payformance(R) Corporation, the nation's leading provider of Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA) services, has standardized on the PGP(R) Encryption Platform. The company is deploying PGP(R) Whole Disk Encryption to protect sensitive customer health care data that is accessed and viewed on corporate laptops or stored on hard drives. Payformance Health is centrally managing the deployment with PGP Universal(TM) Server.

The Challenge

In 2006, after witnessing other companies' highly publicized data breaches due to loss and theft, Payformance Health's senior management and IT team decided to strengthen corporate data security by encrypting all the company's hard drives. In addition to securing sensitive health care data to protect its reputation and safeguard its customers' trust, the company also needed to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) plus breach notification laws, including California Senate Bill 1386. Although privately held companies such as Payformance Health are not subject to the Sarbanes-Oxley or Gramm-Leach-Bliley regulations, they must adhere to those controls to support their publicly held customers' audit requirements.

The Solution

The company's previous encryption solution required labor-intensive, desktop-by-desktop management. According to George Betancourt, Payformance Health's IT director and security official, "When we realized that encrypting all the hard drives would require the physical handling of more than 100 systems, we started looking at what other products were available."

The company's security consultant and integrator, Acuity Solutions, recommended PGP(R) encryption and provided product information plus customer references. "PGP Whole Disk Encryption is a very mature and well-designed solution," says Betancourt, "and I was sold on the ability to centrally manage the deployment with PGP Universal Server."

Payformance Health engaged PGP(R) Professional Services to work with the IT team responsible for installing the PGP solution. Although the IT staff had to manually decrypt and uninstall the previous encryption product from every system, they were able to streamline deployment of the new solution by using Microsoft(R) SMS to remotely push PGP Whole Disk Encryption from their workstations to the desktop. Payformance Health also integrated PGP Universal Server with Microsoft Active Directory(R), thereby leveraging its existing system to manage users and take advantage of the single sign-on capabilities in PGP Whole Disk Encryption.

About PGP Whole Disk Encryption

PGP Whole Disk Encryption allows organizations to address compliance and mitigate risk by encrypting files with centrally managed full disk encryption. All files on protected drives are encrypted, including temporary, swap, and system files. PGP Whole Disk Encryption integrates with an organization's existing infrastructure, streamlining deployment as well as ongoing management and operation. PGP Whole Disk Encryption also integrates with Microsoft Active Directory to automate user enrollment and manage encryption policy.
