Health Care Service Corporation Provides Personal Clinical Summaries to Members of its Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas

Nation's fourth largest health insurer continues expansion of model that integrates and analyzes medical data to optimize member health, reduce unnecessary health care costs and maximize use of evidence-based medicine

CHICAGO, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), which operates the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, today announced that it is providing health plan members with free, private access to personal clinical summaries through the insurer's members-only Web portal.

The clinical summaries are part of HCSC's Blue Care Connection program, which is designed to encourage the pursuit of evidence-based care so that members can improve their health and avoid unnecessary medical costs. Summaries are available now for members in Illinois, New Mexico and Texas, and will be available this fall for members in Oklahoma.

"The value of these electronically available clinical summaries for our members is not only that they provide a concise history of the medical services that we have reimbursed physicians and hospitals for on a member's behalf, but that members will be able to see for themselves potential opportunities for intervention and prevention that they can discuss with their doctors in hopes of leading healthier, more productive lives," said William Gerardi, M.D., clinical advisor for Blue Care Connection.

HCSC developed Blue Care Connection as a means of addressing the problems of increasing medical costs and uneven medical quality. The collaborative care system is designed to link members, health care providers and HCSC's care management clinical staff. The system enables medically recognized clinical rules and protocols to be applied to member health data from claims, health care provider records and self-reported member information. Based on the available information, best-practice treatment opportunities can then be identified and pursued to optimize member health and minimize member health care costs. Those opportunities can be updated whenever additional information is added.

HCSC hopes Blue Care Connection will serve as a model for increasing consumer control over personal health and out-of-pocket health care costs, reducing medically unnecessary spending so that health insurance can become more affordable, and recognizing best outcomes to encourage optimum care throughout the health care system.
