Health Care For 11 Million Children

Broad Bipartisan Support for SCHIP Reauthorization

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following fact sheet was released today by the Office of the Speaker of the House:

Divided We Fail Partnership (AARP, Business Roundtable, National Federation of Independent Businesses and SEIU)

"On behalf of Divided We Fail, we urge you to act promptly to reauthorize and strengthen the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Our nation has a duty to give all of our children the best possible start in life. Strengthening SCHIP can help do that, and is an important building block for comprehensive healthcare reform that we need to provide all Americans with affordable health care." [Letter to Congressional Leadership, 1/12/09]

"Our nation has a duty to give all of our children the best possible start in life. Strengthening SCHIP, which covers children in working families who cannot afford health insurance but do not have incomes low enough to qualify for Medicaid, can help us do that...We can no longer allow so many children to go without access to basic, necessary health care." [Letter to Congressional Leadership, 1/12/09]

American Hospital Association

"The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) has been instrumental in providing health care coverage to more than 7 million low-income children. This legislation will secure coverage for those children and add coverage to approximately 4 million more uninsured children, most of whom are eligible for Medicaid or SCHIP but not enrolled. The restructuring of the state allotments, along with the increased funding amounts, will allow states to cover more children while preventing the shortfalls that have recently plagued the program." [Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]

Families USA

"This bill represents a historic, bipartisan compromise to reach out to the growing number of low-income, uninsured children in this country and ensure that they get access to the healthy start they deserve." [Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]

America's Health Insurance Plans

"Our members enthusiastically support the reauthorization and expansion of SCHIP. As you know, we have been working with other stakeholder groups for more than two years to help build support for improvements to SCHIP. Our Board of Directors has endorsed an access proposal that includes - as part of a comprehensive strategy for achieving universal coverage - a recommendation for a robust SCHIP expansion." [Letter to Speaker Pelosi, 1/13/09]

"PhRMA believes that it is critical for Congress to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) so that millions of low-income children can benefit from this successful program...SCHIP currently provides comprehensive, high-quality health coverage to over six million low-income children. Today, millions of American families have peace of mind that their children have health coverage and can receive regular health exams and preventative care as needed. This track record of success should be continued." [Letter to Speaker Pelosi, 1/14/09]

National Council of Jewish Women

"As the economy worsens, the need to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) has never been more urgent...Efforts in the last Congress to renew this important safety-net program were thwarted by President Bush who vetoed bi-partisan SCHIP bills more than once. As early as Wednesday, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on SCHIP - offering critical health coverage to children and pregnant women in need." [National Council of Jewish Women Action Email, 1/12/09]

National Governors Association

"The nation's governors call on Congress and the new Administration to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) as soon as possible this year. We were encouraged by the bipartisan, bicameral efforts during the 110th Congress and believe these have laid a solid foundation for agreement on full reauthorization of the program prior to the March 31, 2009 deadline." [Letter to Congressional Leadership, 1/13/09]

NETWORK: A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby

"It is critical for the healthy future of our nation that children are provided with health care. We strongly urge you to vote in favor of the State Children's Health Care Program, including the extension to cover additional children and covering immigrant children. We must treat our children with dignity, modeling for them the value of human dignity." [Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]

First Focus

"As an organization committed to improving health care for all children, we know that SCHIP reauthorization is essential if we are to move toward a day when all children have access to the coverage they need. In these dire economic times, this program serves as a critical lifeline for millions of American families." [Letter to Speaker Pelosi, 1/13/09]

Consumers Union

"Reducing the number of uninsured children -- and thereby improving the long-term health of the nation -- is one of the most important health legislative goals of this Congress and is a stepping stone to comprehensive health reform. Furthermore, by paying for the insurance expansion through tobacco taxes, you will also help discourage the use of death and disease-promoting products -- another great investment toward a healthier American future." [Letter to Congress, 1/12/09]

American Dental Hygienists Association

"This SCHIP reauthorization agreement would stabilize dental care for children in poor working families by providing a federal guarantee for dental coverage. While nine million children lack health insurance coverage, more than twenty million children are not covered for dental services, according to the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured." [Letter to Speaker Pelosi, 1/11/09]

Fight Crime: Invest in Kids

"The law enforcement leaders of FIGHT CRIME: INVEST IN KIDS know from the front lines in the fight against crime -- and the research -- that investments in children's health insurance are critical to our nation's public safety. The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) can provide coverage for many effective interventions to treat kids with behavioral or emotional problems -- preventing later violence and saving taxpayers money." [Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]

Leadership Council on Civil Rights

"Building on the success of Medicaid, SCHIP has significantly improved children's access to health care, and has made great strides in covering racial and ethnic minority children...States already spend their own money to provide safety net programs for low-income immigrants. Allowing states to use some federally funded services toward that goal would bring significant fiscal relief to states and would give them the flexibility to better address the needs of their populations." [Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]

American Public Health Association

"This legislation is the product of intense negotiations by all parties involved and is especially critical given these difficult economic times." [Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]

California State Association of Counties & County Welfare Directors Association of California

"During this period of great economic stress on families, an expeditious reauthorization of SCHIP is critical." [Joint Letter to Congress, 1/13/09]
