Health Care District's Board Chair Nationally Recognized as a Modern Healthcare 'Trustee of the Year'
Date:2/11/2008

County is noted for owning the 73-bed Glades General Hospital in Belle Glade and the 198-bed Edward J. Healey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. The article describes the District's operation of Level II trauma centers at Delray Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center as well as its healthcare programs for the uninsured.

In the letter notifying the Health Care District of the award, David May, the assistant managing editor/features for Modern Healthcare, writes: "Nearly 70 trustees were nominated for this year's awards from healthcare organizations across the country. The level of competition was high, with so many dedicated trustees who have given of their time and talent and have much to show for their efforts. It was extremely difficult to choose among so many who have worked tirelessly to improve healthcare in their communities."

The Modern Healthcare Trustee of the Year award was established to honor exemplary leaders in healthcare who work to ensure that "our hospitals and health systems provide the finest care possible, keep patients safe and treat the poor and disenfranchised." The judging criteria include consideration of accountability and leadership in community relations, ethics, strategy, and finance.

"For those of us who have worked with Dr. Pierce, his commitment to the health and welfare of this community is obvious and threads through every decision or project that the Health Care District undertakes," said Dwight D. Chenette, Chief Executive Officer of the Health Care District.

Added Jonathan Satter, Health Care District Board Vice-Chair, "Dr. Pierce's financial stewardship, skillful strategic planning and advocacy of community outreach to the region's uninsured residents are reflected in the District's accomplishments and growth. He is a model of the dedicated Board member and we are delighted that he has been recognized as such and so honored for his many contributions."
