Health Care Bill Helps Seniors with Alzheimer's
Date:3/29/2010

The California Elder Law Center wants senior Alzheimer’s patients to know their new rights under the health care reform bill.

Lakewood, CA (PRWEB) -- The California Elder Law Center, which specializes in Medi-Cal, Aid & Attendance programs, Alzheimer’s patient life-care planning and Veterans benefit plans, urges seniors to investigate their new rights under the recently passed health care plan. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the new plan includes significant provisions to aid the growing Alzheimer’s population in the U.S. “This is a great opportunity for seniors and their families who are facing the high cost of health care due to Alzheimer’s to get the quality insurance coverage they need,” said Attorney at Law Michael McGuire.

The new voluntary insurance program is designed to assist people who become unable to perform two or more functional daily activities by paying for non-medical services and support; traditionally not covered under Medicare plans. This allows seniors to remain in their homes and communities for much longer and maintain a higher quality of life. With more than 5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, this piece of care-centered legislation is exactly what families have been waiting for. Individuals pay premiums into the plan, just like regular private insurance, while they are working. After they can no longer work, they become eligible for cash benefits that can be used to pay for assistive technology, accessible transportation, homemaker services, respite care, home modifications, personal assistance services as well as home care aids.

Specializing in life-care planning for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients, the California Elder Law Center urges families to read the important Alzheimer-specific provisions here. The Alzheimer’s Association and its advocates have pledged to continue working with Congress and the Administration to bring about greater change and investment in Alzheimer research and to create a national plan to overcome this swiftly escalating crisis. Tell your Members of Congress that we need to renew the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

This historic health care package, passed Sunday, March 21, 2010, is a complex bill that will undoubtedly impact all Americans including seniors suffering from this debilitating disease. The House passed both the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was passed by the Senate in December, and the Reconciliation Act of 2010, which includes changes to the Senate-passed bill.
