WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), in collaboration with Cisco Systems, has demonstrated the ability to rapidly, safely, and securely exchange healthcare information in a virtual - or cloud - computing environment.
At a recent demonstration during the Public Health Information Network Conference in Atlanta, the companies showed that security and privacy of web-based health information remains protected with a service as data is encrypted in transit and stored securely in the cloud. The demonstration was implemented over the CONNECT health information exchange platform with a Cisco Systems AXP router.
CONNECT is a standards-based, scalable, open-source gateway solution that enables secure health information exchange between health information organizations across the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). Under contract from the Federal Health Architecture within the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Harris provided the technical expertise for CONNECT to enable federal agencies, states, regional health organizations and private providers to seamlessly share health information upon request. The CONNECT gateway ensures that all NHIN specifications are met by the entity that is providing or receiving data on the network.
For the demonstration, Harris developed and installed a custom gateway adapter directly to a Cisco AXP router, enabling the CONNECT platform to be hosted securely over the Internet in a cloud computing environment. A cloud environment is one in which servers and resources are remotely maintained and their use is 'virtually' available to customers, drastically reducing or eliminating the need for capital investment and additional IT support.
