Harris Corporation Demonstrates Secure Exchange of Public Health Information in 'Cloud' Computing Environment
Date:9/30/2009

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), in collaboration with Cisco Systems, has demonstrated the ability to rapidly, safely, and securely exchange healthcare information in a virtual - or cloud - computing environment.

At a recent demonstration during the Public Health Information Network Conference in Atlanta, the companies showed that security and privacy of web-based health information remains protected with a service as data is encrypted in transit and stored securely in the cloud. The demonstration was implemented over the CONNECT health information exchange platform with a Cisco Systems AXP router.

CONNECT is a standards-based, scalable, open-source gateway solution that enables secure health information exchange between health information organizations across the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). Under contract from the Federal Health Architecture within the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Harris provided the technical expertise for CONNECT to enable federal agencies, states, regional health organizations and private providers to seamlessly share health information upon request. The CONNECT gateway ensures that all NHIN specifications are met by the entity that is providing or receiving data on the network.

For the demonstration, Harris developed and installed a custom gateway adapter directly to a Cisco AXP router, enabling the CONNECT platform to be hosted securely over the Internet in a cloud computing environment. A cloud environment is one in which servers and resources are remotely maintained and their use is 'virtually' available to customers, drastically reducing or eliminating the need for capital investment and additional IT support.

During the event, Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) in New York, Indiana and Washington demonstrated how influenza-related symptom information for public reporting could work using NHIN services. The CONNECT solution, integrated with the Cisco router, acted as the gateway by which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrated accessing and retrieving the influenza data utilizing the NHIN.

"CONNECT is a platform for integration and innovation that drives data and situational awareness to the point of care and benefits delivery," said Jim Traficant, vice president of Healthcare Solutions for Harris Corporation. "The innovative approach that Harris and Cisco demonstrated can be integrated with any healthcare organization's existing infrastructure. It's ideal for HIEs, hospitals and other providers that want to use existing technology and quickly bridge to the NHIN for interoperable information exchange and integrated decision-making."

The solution was designed and implemented by a team of Harris engineers - in collaboration with Cisco - in just one week, including connection to each of the three HIEs.

The Public Health Information Network Conference, hosted August 31 through September 2 by the CDC, brought together CDC officials and representatives of state and local public health organizations, academic institutions, standards development organizations, and the World Health Organization to share promising practices and lessons learned related to public health informatics.
