Accreditation demonstrates commitment to industry best practices, meets new
state government requirements
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- National health care consulting practice Halleland Health Consulting announces the development of a comprehensive accreditation preparation program for health plans and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) seeking the level of excellence required by the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC).
The URAC assistance program is expected to be an important guide for organizations at a time when states are beginning to mandate accreditation as a prerequisite for PBMs conducting business in their area. In April 2008, Maryland became the first state to recognize URAC's process and include accreditation by an approved organization as a requirement.
First developed in 1990, URAC standards evaluate program components such as core organizational quality, customer service, communications and disclosure, pharmacy distribution channels, drug use management, formulary and drug therapy management and Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee functions.
In 2008, URAC introduced two additional programs under its Pharmacy Quality Management initiative, offering accreditation for Mail Service Pharmacies and Specialty Pharmacies. The additions bring the entire suite of programs to four, supplementing existing accreditations in Pharmacy Benefit Management and Drug Therapy Management. Halleland Health Consulting has helped PBM clients achieve accreditation in all four areas, and has developed its preparation program to apply its proven model to other PBMs and health plans also interested in becoming accredited.
