Gym and Exercise Equipment Manufacturing in the US Industry Market Research Report from IBISWorld Has Been Updated
Date:9/15/2013

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 15, 2013

The Gym and Exercise Equipment Manufacturing industry produces a variety of equipment, including treadmills, exercise bikes and weights, which it then sells to retailers and wholesalers. Revenue is heavily affected by sports participation, downstream demand from retailers and wholesalers and exchange rates. Exchange rates, in particular, have been strong indicators of the industry's direction; the increase in imports and the decrease in exports in recent years have led to a slow decline for the entire manufacturing sector.

In 2013, the Gym and Exercise Equipment industry is expected to record its second consecutive year of revenue growth after more than 10 years of decline, with revenue rising a modest 1.2%. Nonetheless, in the five years to 2013, IBISWorld estimates that revenue has declined an average 2.3% annually to $3.9 billion. Growth in the volume of sporting goods imported into the United States has created a significant obstacle for manufacturers, leading to decreased sales for domestic manufacturers. In addition, the recession caused consumer demand for discretionary goods, such as sporting and athletic equipment, to decline. This factor has created a buildup in inventory at the retail level, translating to decreased demand for manufactured goods. As a result of year-on-year revenue declines, the number of industry operators has declined in 2013, as companies consolidated or left the industry.

A recovering economy will result in improved sales at the retail level. As consumers become increasingly health conscious and the government ramps up its antiobesity programs, demand for athletic equipment will increase, leading to steady growth in revenue. Despite a rise in demand, the number of employees in this industry is projected to fall over the five years to 2018. Companies are expected to continue lowering their labor costs by decreasing production in the United States. As a result, the outsourcing of jobs overseas will become more prevalent, and import penetration will steadily increase.
