Gwinnett Medical Center Offers Medical Residents Option

Gwinnett Medical Center’s Graduate Medical Education Program recently received institutional initial accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and by the American Osteopathic Association for its new family medicine residency. The first class of GMC residents will begin training in June 2014. The interviewing process has begun; GMC will hope to accept up to five residents during the first year.

Family medicine residency training at GMC will provide graduates with the skills needed to meet the diverse medical needs of the community. From newborn care to geriatrics and including maternity care, the program will focus on developing well-trained family physicians to deliver patient-centered care while maintaining a cost-conscious and community-centric approach to health.

GMC’s family medicine residency program is affiliated with the Georgia Campus - Philadelphia College Osteopathic Medicine and The Georgia Regents University/The University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens.

“It’s well documented that physicians remain in the community where they complete their residency; the greater north metro stands to benefit from this program as it will help address the severe primary care physician shortage in Georgia,” said Phil Wolfe, GMC’s president and CEO.

“We fully support Gwinnett Medical’s pursuit of a residency program and what it means for our local offerings,” said Nick Masino, senior vice president, Gwinnett Chamber. “Gwinnett Medical’s graduate education training program meets specific needs outlined in the Partnership Gwinnett County and Economic Development strategy to further our community’s quality of life.”

“Our goal is to graduate residents who can continue to grow in their scope and skill and not be defined by the finite limits that three years of training can provide,” said Family Medicine Residency Director Kevin Johnson, MD, for the Graduate Medical Education Program. “The life-long learning techniques they gain at GMC will help them maintain their place on the cutting edge of medicine, and also advance the science of Family Medicine.”
