Gulfside Dental Hosts Successful Oral Cancer Screening Event in honor of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month
Date:4/20/2013

Beaumont, TX (PRWEB) April 20, 2013

Gulfside Dental, a family dentistry office in Beaumont, Texas, recently hosted a very successful oral cancer screening event with over two dozen Southeast Texans in attendance. “This was our first year to host the free cancer screening and we are very pleased with the response we received from the community,” says Dr. Ashley DeMarco of Gulfside Dental.

Close to 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 42,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years.

As part of Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April, the Oral Cancer Foundation is recommending regular dental checkups for an oral cancer screening. Dental professionals can act as a first line of defense in the early detection of oral cancer. “The death rate associated with oral cancers is high not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but because it is discovered late in its development,” says Dr. DeMarco. “It is important to see your dentist every six months for cleaning and regular oral cancer screening at your six-month check-up.”
A special thank you to the dentists, Ashley DeMarco DDS and Victor Ticas DDS, the volunteers, the Oral Cancer Foundation and the local media partners who made the event possible for the Southeast Texas!
