Guardian Highlights the Importance of Critical Illness Insurance During American Heart Month
Date:2/12/2009

ies not only emotionally, but financially as well," said Barry Petruzzi, 2nd vice president, Group Benefits. "A 2008 Guardian study revealed that 90% of adults in the U.S. know someone who has battled a critical illness such as a heart attack, cancer or stroke. The prevalence of ailments like heart disease and cancer, coupled with high survival rates, underscore the value of critical illness insurance. If we could hand a $5,000 or $10,000 check to a person as they recover from a heart attack, stroke or cancer diagnosis, few would argue against the fact that the money would go a long way to help with recovery."

Important Facts about Critical Illness Insurance and Heart Disease

  • According to the American Heart Association, survival rates for heart attacks are 67% today, up from 45% in 1950.
  • Critical illness insurance can be very affordable when purchased at work. Insurance payments can be less than the price of four premium cups of coffee each month.
  • Group critical illness insurance is a low-cost complement to disability and medical plans, such as high deductible health plans. Critical Illness payments can help pay for deductibles associated with major illnesses such as a heart attack or stroke.
  • The Family Medical Leave Act enables relatives to take time off from work to care for loved ones, but does not guarantee pay. Critical illness insurance can be used to cover lost income for prevalent illnesses that trigger FMLA absences.
  • New generations of group critical illness insurance can provide additional coverage for hospital stays without regard to a particular illness. Older generations of critical illness only covered very specific illnesses.
