Growth in Hawaii Long Term Care Costs Outpacing the Rate of Inflation, According to Annual Genworth Financial Study

A Snapshot of Hawaii Long Term Care Costs

Nursing Homes: Genworth's 2009 Cost of Care Survey analyzed long term care costs in two regions in Hawaii: Honolulu and the rest of the state. The median annual cost for a private nursing home room ranges from $123,005 in Honolulu to $152,342 across the rest of Hawaii.

Assisted Living: The median annual cost in Honolulu is $42,000 for a private room in an assisted living facility, representing an annual decrease of 3 percent over the past five years. Across the rest of the state, the median annual cost is $30,000, representing an annual decrease of 6 percent over the past five years. Nationally, the annual cost for a private room in an assisted living facility is $33,903 and costs have increased 5 percent annually over the past five years.

Home Care: The median hourly rate for a non-Medicare certified, state licensed home health aide ranges from $22 in Honolulu to $25 across the rest of Hawaii. Costs have risen 3 percent annually over the past five years in both Honolulu and throughout the rest of the state. The cost nationally for this type of care is $18 per hour, with costs increasing 2 percent annually over the past five years.

Adult Day Health Care: For adult day health care services, the median daily rate statewide is $65. The daily rate nationally is $54.
