Growth in Florida Long Term Care Costs Outpacing the Rate of Inflation, According to Annual Genworth Financial Study

"Floridians who had planned to tap their hard-earned nest egg to cover future long term care costs are finding this may no longer be a viable option given the economic downturn," said Buck Stinson, president, insurance products at Genworth Financial. "Two-thirds of people over age 65 will need long term care in their lifetimes. The localized information provided by Genworth's 2009 Cost of Care Survey is invaluable to families and their trusted advisors in mapping out a financial security strategy to cover the growing cost of this vital care."

A Snapshot of Florida Long Term Care Costs

Nursing Homes: The median annual cost for a private nursing home room ranges in Florida from $70,810 in Tallahassee to $93,075 in Naples. The annual cost in Jacksonville is $72,088. Orlando and Miami-Fort Lauderdale costs are slightly higher at $75,920 and $76,650, respectively. Tampa-St. Petersburg has the highest annual cost of Florida's four largest regions surveyed at $82,125.

Assisted Living: Jacksonville has seen an annual increase in assisted living costs for a private room rise 5 percent a year since 2005 to a median annual cost of $30,570. Costs in smaller regions such as West Palm Beach-Boca Raton and Fort Walton Beach have increased annually by 12 percent and 24 percent, respectively, over the same time period. Statewide, annual assisted living costs range from $18,600 a year in Miami-Fort Lauderdale to $42,000 in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area for a private room. Nationally, the annual cost for a private room in an assisted living facility is $33,903 and costs have increased 5 percent annually over the past five years.

Home Care: The median hourly rate for a non-Medicare certified, state licensed home health aide ranges from $15 to $21 across the Sunshine State. Cost
