(PRWEB) May 4, 2010 -- Grantham University, specializing in educating working adults for nearly 60 years, announced today that it is adding a Certificate of Learning in Medical Coding and Billing to its current curriculum. The Certificate of Learning, which is completed 100% online, is designed for those students who want to get a quick start in the profession of medical coding, and prepares students for the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate exam, a medical coding and billing industry certification.

"We are very excited to add the Certificate of Learning to expand our Medical Coding and Billing offerings,” said Dr. Cynthia Akagi, chair of Grantham University’s Health Sciences Programs. “The Certificate of Learning not only provides our students with an additional educational option, it also fulfills a need for qualified coders and billers in the rapidly growing healthcare industry.”

In 2008, the healthcare sector added 419,000 jobs and the job outlook for this industry remains strong. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 20% through 2018, which is much faster than the average.

The Certificate of Learning in Medical Coding and Billing requires 28 credit hours of coursework. Upon completion of the coursework, students will be prepared to explain medical terms and abbreviations commonly used in health information management systems, identify HIPAA regulations related to health information management, and utilize healthcare coding and billing software to work in the healthcare industry. The Certificate of Learning prepares students for the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate exam, a medical coding and billing industry certification. In addition, Certificate of Learning students may continue their education by applying credit hours earned toward the Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Coding and Billing at Grantham.
