Grandson of Slaves Wins Experience of a Lifetime, Heads to Washington, D.C. to Attend Presidential Inauguration Events
Date:1/16/2009

Special Senior Set to Witness 'Greatest Moment of His Life'

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ --

WHO: Alfred Bouey, resident of Holley Court Terrace, a Brookdale
Senior Living independent and assisted living community in
                Oak Park, Ill.

WHAT: Bouey has been honored as a winner of his Experience of a
Lifetime, and is headed to Washington, D.C. to witness and
take part in the historic Presidential Inauguration of
                Barack Obama.

WHEN: Bouey and his family will be in the Washington, D.C. area
                from Jan. 18-21.

With special thanks to Destination DC, Washington, DC's lead
tourism and marketing corporation, Bouey and his family will
observe the swearing-in of Barack Obama and the Inaugural
Parade from the comfort of the Power Spot Lounge at the
Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center on
                Jan. 20.

SUMMARY: "I remember growing up in the south when everything was
segregated," said Bouey. "I never dreamed this day would
                ever happen in American history."

"I can recall the days of slavery when my grandfather and
grandmother were whipped and beaten, and had the scars to
prove it," said Bouey. "When I saw Barack Obama come out to
make his acceptance speech, I started crying and never
stopped. I still don't believe it to this day that he was
elected President of the United States."

Bouey won this opportunity through Brookdale's Experiences of
a Lifetime program. Residents at selected Brookdale Senior
Living communities nationwide were given the opportunity to
share and submit their wishes as part of a program called
Experiences of a Lifetime. They filled out a survey form
explaining an experience they would like to have fulfilled,
and how that related to one or more dimensions of the
                company's Optimum Life(R) concept.

Bouey's mother worked hard, and Bouey was able to attend
school. After graduating from high school, he attended
                Arkansas A&M for Negroes only.

He was drafted into the Segregated Army, and served his
country with a group of African-American men. Being one of
the only college-educated men there, he quickly moved up the
ranks and was promoted to Sergeant.

Returning to the South after serving duty, Bouey found that
nothing had changed. There were no jobs for him, and
segregation was still a major fact of life.

In June of 1946, Bouey couldn't take it any longer, and moved
to Chicago with $10 in his pocket and no place to go. When
President Truman opened the opportunity for African-Americans
to work in the government, Bouey took an administrative job
                with the Army Procurement Division.

In 1954, Bouey was part of the first group of
African-American men to become police officers for the
                Chicago Police Department.

For Bouey, President-Elect Obama represents "hope." "When
Obama was elected, it was not a dream come true because I
never dreamt it would happen," said Bouey. "But I sure
                'hoped' it would."

"To see the inauguration of President Elect Obama will be the
greatest moment of my life," said Bouey. "Not many people can
say they have the opportunity of witnessing history in the
                making."

In addition, on Friday, Jan. 16 Senator Don Harmon (39th
District Illinois) sponsored a special proclamation which was
awarded by the Illinois State Senate to Bouey in recognition
of his participation in the Inauguration, and the Experiences
                of a Lifetime program.

Brookdale's Optimum Life(R) concept is geared toward
cultivating whole-person wellness through fulfillment in six
key dimensions: physical, emotional, purposeful, social,
spiritual, and intellectual. The company's Experiences of a
Lifetime program provides a helping hand in making some of
the dreams of its residents come true.
