HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell has proclaimed Sept. 9 - 15 as "Senior Community Center Week" to recognize the important role senior centers play in the lives of older Pennsylvanians.

"Senior community centers are a visible symbol of our concern and support for older adults," said Governor Rendell. "The more than 650 centers in all 67 counties provide opportunities for seniors to stay active and healthy, continue learning, share experiences and stay connected with friends and community members."

The Governor said the centers often help older persons enhance their dignity, support their independence and encourage their continued involvement in the community.

In addition to keeping participants socially involved, most centers provide healthy, nutritious meals. More than 91,000 people take advantage of this service and more than 4.3 million meals are served annually at the centers.

"Our senior community centers continue to meet the challenges of the changing faces of the aging," the Governor said. "Their services will be relied upon even more as the Baby Boomer generation reaches maturity."
