Governor Quinn Declares “Nothing But Nets” Week
Date:5/26/2010

Local students to receive award for raising more than $30,000 to fight malaria

Chicago, IL (Vocus) May 26, 2010 -- Today Illinois Governor Pat Quinn declared May 24-30 “Nothing But Nets” week in Illinois in support of the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign. Throughout the week, Nothing But Nets—a global, grassroots campaign to end malaria in Africa—is hosting a series of events in the Chicago area to raise awareness about the global goal to end malaria deaths by 2015.

In 2007, Governor Pat Quinn challenged Chicago elementary school students to raise funds to send life-saving bed nets to protect families in Africa. Today, their dedication will be recognized by former Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star and Nothing But Nets champion Diego Gutierrez, who will present an award to students from Holy Family Catholic Academy and St. Frances of Rome. Together, the schools have raised more than $30,000. The award presentation will be followed by a malaria-education workshop for nearly 400 students.

“The Chicago-area, and Governor Quinn in particular, have been stalwart supporters of Nothing But Nets, consistently demonstrating the global impact that local actions can make,” said Adrianna Logalbo, Director of Nothing But Nets. “We’ve been fortunate to work with Luol Deng and the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago Fire, Governor Quinn, and students throughout the Chicago area. Chicago has provided a great example of how entire communities can join the global fight against malaria.”

BACKGROUND
This year, Nothing But Nets is criss-crossing the country to raise awareness about malaria in the lead up to the FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted by South Africa, and for the first time in Africa. On its “Buzz Tour” to more than 20 cities, Nothing But Nets is travelling in a converted school bus, fueled by waste vegetable oil and outfitted with solar panels. The Chicago Fire, as part of the MLS partnership, supports Nothing But Nets and will spotlight malaria prevention efforts at their game on Thursday, May 27th.

Every 30 seconds, a child dies from malaria - which is easily prevented through the use of an insecticide-treated bed net. The nets create a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when the vast majority of malaria transmissions occur, and are the most cost-effective method of preventing the spread of the disease. One bed net can protect a family of four, and lasts three to five years. A net costs just $10 to purchase, deliver and educate the recipient on its proper use.

To date, Nothing But Nets has raised close to $30 million and has distributed nearly three million nets to children, pregnant women and refugees throughout Africa. For more information, including photos, video, and Buzz Tour schedule, log on to www.NothingButNets.net/buzztour.
