Governor Lauds Pennsylvania Dental Association Member Participation in Donated Dental Services Program
Date:6/24/2008

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In proclaiming June 20 Donated Dental Services (DDS) Program Appreciation Day, the Honorable Edward G. Rendell acknowledged the significant charitable contributions made by Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) members across the state.

"We are extremely pleased that the governor has honored the Pennsylvania DDS program and its volunteer dentists," said Thomas W. Gamba, DDS, president of the PDA. "Since the inception of the Pennsylvania DDS program in 1996, PDA members have been dedicated to providing donated dental treatment to disabled, medically compromised and aged Pennsylvanians. Through the generosity of dentists and dental laboratories, the Pennsylvania DDS program has provided $5 million in donated dental services to some of Pennsylvania's most vulnerable citizens.

"The DDS program is just one of the many ways our member dentists provide care to Pennsylvanians in need," said Dr. Gamba. "Our members regularly volunteer at free and reduced-fee dental clinics, offer free days of dental care to individuals who have no dental insurance and who do not qualify for Medical Assistance and volunteer to provide dental care to children who would otherwise fall through the cracks at Give Kids A Smile(SM) programs across the state. They also provide dental education to children during the annual National Children's Dental Health Month in February and all year long by volunteering at local day care centers, elementary schools and Boys and Girls Clubs."

Applicants for the Pennsylvania DDS program must be disabled or elderly (receiving SSI, SSDI or SSA). In addition, applicants need to meet financial guidelines, have no dental insurance and have a major dental need. Children with chronic illnesses, emotional issues, developmental delays or learning issues also may be eligible for the program.
