Globus Medical's MicroFuse(TM) Technology Engineered for Optimal Strength and Porosity
Date:3/25/2009

AUDUBON, Pa., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Globus Medical, Inc., the largest privately held spinal implant manufacturer in the world, today announced the launch of MicroFuse(TM) ST Granules, a unique resorbable polymer bone void filler optimized for both strength and porosity. MicroFuse(TM) technology utilizes proprietary combinations of poly (lactic acid) and poly (lactide-co-glycolide) polymers manufactured with a patented microsphere process to deliver up to twelve times the strength and twice the ideal porosity ratio of competing synthetic bone void fillers.

MicroFuse(TM)'s strength is derived from its unique three-dimensional structure which translates into better intra-operating handling characteristics. Due to its bonded sphere structure, MicroFuse(TM) is less likely to break apart while mixing with bone graft and during impaction at the bone defect site. MicroFuse(TM)'s structure is also designed to maximize the amount of pores in the optimal range for bone formation. Over 88 percent of MicroFuse(TM) pores are in this ideal range while most porous ceramics have many pores that are too small to allow for bone in-growth or are too large, which can slow the bone regeneration process.

"MicroFuse(TM) technology represents a unique entry into the synthetic bone substitute market. With an optimal combination of strength and porosity, MicroFuse(TM) is specifically engineered to resorb and be fully replaced by bone," said Mark Borden, Ph.D., Director of Biomaterials, Globus Medical, Inc. "From the choice of resorbable polymers to the size of the individual microspheres, developmental efforts were focused on providing the best possible environment for bone growth."

MILDER(TM)-the Natural Evolution of Spine Care

The MicroFuse(TM) ST Granules are the product of a significant development effort by Globus, and represent the latest addition to Globus Medical's MILDER(TM) Spine Care portfolio. MILDER(TM) (Minimally Invasive, Less Disruptive, Earlier Recovery) Spine Care encompasses a holistic approach to spine care that integrates minimally invasive surgical techniques with implants, instrumentation, and education designed to lessen the disruption to a patient's anatomic structures and natural range of motion in order to facilitate an earlier, pain-free recovery.
