Global Autism Project Announces Distance Supervision for Autism Professionals

This week the Global Autism project announced a new program, offering remote supervision to professionals seeking certification in behavior analysis.

According to the Cen5ters for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 88 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. With these startling numbers, the need for comprehensive evidence-based treatment has become a great concern.

There has been agreement on which treatments are supported by evidence and both the U.S. Surgeon general and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend the use of applied behavior analysis (ABA), the only treatment that has been demonstrated effective. State governments have also responded to the need for ABA and many have passed legislation requiring insurance companies to cover applied behavior analysis under the close supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

However, many families are unable to access these essential services because of a shortage of BCBA’s. According to the certification Board’s registry, some U.S. states have fewer than 100 BCBA’s Internationally, the problem can be even greater than that, with many countries having less than 10, or none at all. Many professionals are unable to gain this certification, since it requires supervision by a current BCBA.

To address this issue, the Global Autism Project will be launching their distance supervision program beginning in early 2013. “Our mission is to support professionals and promote evidence-based practice worldwide,” explains Clinical Director Ann Beirne, “This new program is a perfect fit with that mission.” We are now taking a more active role in addressing the global shortage of people trained to work with individuals with autism.
