BOTHELL, Wash., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Verathon(R) is pleased to announce the GlideScope(R) Ranger Video Laryngoscope has been granted Airworthiness Certification from the United States Army.(1) This certificate allows the device to be used by military health care personnel in some of the most demanding military settings.

The U.S. Army Airworthiness Certification and Evaluation program is a rigorous program. It includes extensive aeromedical testing in both the laboratory, as well as aboard MEDEVAC H-60 helicopters. The evaluation can include electromagnetic interference and compatibility, environmental, and human factors testing in the laboratory, as well as assessments by engineers and medical personnel under a variety of conditions. The certification is issued only after comprehensive testing, to ensure the safety of the aircraft, its systems, its crew and its patients on board.

"We are extremely proud to receive this Airworthiness Certification for the GlideScope(R) Ranger Video Laryngoscope," said Vietnam veteran and CEO of Verathon, Gerald McMorrow. "Every letter and email we receive from military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan who are using our devices in the field, renews our commitment to providing well-designed, reliable medical devices for those in harm's way."

About the GlideScope(R) Ranger Video Laryngoscope:

The patented GlideScope(R) Ranger was designed to meet the needs of military physicians and paramedics who regularly treat patients with severe trauma and who intubate in extreme conditions.(2)

The Ranger provides a clear picture of the larynx and vocal cords on a display monitor, enabling visual control of the endotracheal tube (ETT) in its trajectory toward the airway. The GlideScope(R) Ranger takes less force than traditional methods, helping eliminate trauma to patients.(3) It facilitates fast, accurate ETT placement in difficult and routine airways, (4,5) and helps prevent improper ETT placement and related complications in emergency, out-of- hospital situations.

The GlideScope(R) Ranger, operational in seconds, is compact for easy carrying and storage, measuring only 7 1/4 x 6 3/8 inches and weighing less than two pounds. It includes a high-resolution camera with an anti-fogging mechanism to resist lens contamination; a non-glare color monitor that is easily seen in bright light; and a choice of two sizes of reusable "blades."

The GlideScope(R) Ranger Single Use consists of: a choice of two sizes of video baton which houses the high resolution camera with anti-fogging mechanism, a non-glare color monitor, and a choice of four sizes of sterile, single-use GVL(R) Stats.

Both Ranger models come with the GlideRite(R) reusable stylet, which facilitates tube placement.

With its rugged, high-impact construction, the Ranger was designed to be dependable in an array of field conditions, including temperatures of -4 degrees to +122 degrees F, humidity up to 100 percent, and altitude up to 20,000 feet. The integrated, rechargeable lithium battery is designed to provide a minimum of 90-minutes of continuous-use and allow for approximately 20 intubations per battery cycle (depending on usage).
