GPhA Congratulates President-Elect Barack Obama and New Congress and Urges Action on Increasing Access to Generic -- and Biogeneric -- Medicines
Date:11/5/2008

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) released the following statement today from GPhA President and CEO Kathleen Jaeger on the 2008 election results:

All across the country yesterday, voters went to the polls with economic issues top of mind. Our new President and new Congress must now tackle the serious challenges facing our economy, including rising health care costs. One way to significantly reduce health care costs is for our elected officials to increase access to affordable generic - and biogeneric - medicines.

The generic industry congratulates President-Elect Barack Obama and the new Congress and looks forward to working with them in addressing critical health care issues. President-elect Obama has stated his commitment to increasing access to generic medicines to help Americans obtain safe and effective medicines at affordable prices. At GPhA's Annual Policy Conference this past September, Senator Obama's health policy advisor said that President-elect Obama supports increased funding to ensure a strong FDA, and would also address important issues including citizen petitions, state carve-outs, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and authorized generics as part of his health care agenda.

Moreover, President-Elect Obama has expressed his strong support for bringing lifesaving, affordable biogeneric medicines to patients in need. His campaign stated that, as President, he would support legislation to create a biogenerics approval pathway with as short an exclusivity period as possible to ensure timely consumer access. That's welcome news to the countless Americans who are struggling to afford the extremely high costs of brand biopharmaceutical medicines.

GPhA also stands ready to work with the Obama Administration and Congress to ensure the safety of all medicines. Safety must always be our number one priority.

GPhA also congratulates Senator John McCain for running a strong campaign, we appreciate his past support for increasing access to more affordable generic medicines, and we look forward to his continued leadership on issues related to affordable health care for all Americans.

2009 will be a year of great challenges for the new Administration and new Congress, but it can also be a year of extraordinary opportunities. We look forward to working with President-Elect Obama and all members of Congress. There is no doubt that bringing affordable generic and biogeneric medicines to consumers will help our new President and Congress deal with rising health care costs. Generic - and biogeneric - medicines are truly the right choice for better health.

GPhA represents the manufacturers and distributors of finished generic pharmaceuticals, manufacturers and distributors of bulk active pharmaceutical chemicals, and suppliers of other goods and services to the generic drug industry. Generics represent 65% of the total prescriptions dispensed in the United States, but only 20% of all dollars spent on prescription drugs.
