Fourth Annual Fibroid Awareness Week April 22-27 – Providing Hope for Women with Fibroids
Date:4/16/2013

Los Angeles (CA) (PRWEB) April 16, 2013

One out of three women over the age of 45 will suffer from fibroids and many will undergo unnecessary hysterectomies. Fibroid Awareness Week was established in 2010 to help spread the word about fibroids and the treatment options.

Fibroid Awareness Week is sponsored by The Fibroid Treatment Collective and its founder, Bruce McLucas, M.D.

“Too many women are not receiving enough information on all of the options for treating fibroids,” said Dr. McLucas, “and some are not receiving any information at all. During Fibroid Awareness Week, we focus on separating fact from fiction and help women choose the option that is best for them.”

During this important week, a number of free events are scheduled to help educate women about fibroids and treatment choices, including embolization – a non-surgical treatment.

That will be followed by a Fibroid Seminar at 11 a.m. in the Convention Center Theater, West Hall Parking. There, guests will learn about fibroids, hear real patient stories and get one-on-one time with the doctor.

“Our goal during the fourth annual Fibroid Awareness Week, is to make it easy for women with fibroids to have access to all the information they need to make an informed decision about their course of treatment,” said Dr. McLucas. “There is so much more they need to know and understand.”

Fibroid Facts:

  •     Fibroids will affect one out of three women over 45 years of age.
  •     At least 50 percent will have symptoms severe enough to require treatment.
  •     African American women have the highest incidence of fibroids.
  •     Many of the 600,000 annual hysterectomies used to treat fibroids are unnecessary.
  •     Uterine fibroids cost the U.S. health care system anywhere from $5.9 billion to $34.4 billion a year. The costs stem largely from lost work and disability.
  •     More than $5 billion dollars is spent on hysterectomies annually, and up to 144 million work hours are lost due to procedure recovery.
  •     Approximately 660 women die each year in the United States due to complications from a hysterectomy.
  •     An estimated 25,000 uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) procedures have been performed worldwide.

The Fibroid Treatment Collective is a medical group of fibroid experts dedicated to curing fibroids with minimally invasive therapy with a special emphasis on embolization. Embolization is recognized as an effective procedure by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The Fibroid Treatment Collective was founded by Dr. Bruce McLucas, a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist that performed the first U.S. embolization in 1994 at UCLA Medical Center.
