Forceps Births Double, Obesity is Major Reason in Births Complications
Date:6/18/2013

Vienna, VA (PRWEB) June 18, 2013

As obesity rates sky rocket in the United States and abroad, the increase in need for surgical equipment during childbirth comes as no shock. Forceps are surgical equipment used to pull the child from within the mother when she is unable to do so herself and although they are useful in difficult deliveries, they are associated with higher rates of complication for both the mother and the baby.

In addition to being harmful to the mother and child, forceps births add to the pressure of healthcare providers, including governments. England’s government paid out over $6 million for claims involving botched forceps deliveries resulting in permanent injury to the mother, baby, or both. Between 2000 and 2012 the use of forceps has doubled from 2.8% to 6.5%, reports the Telegraph, causing concern for government and healthcare officials alike (The Telegraph, 02/01/2013).

Apart from forceps, vacuum deliveries and Cesarean section or C-section deliveries became also common practice. In the United States, reports Reuters, the C-section delivery surged up 21% between 1997 and 2007. Despite this surge, there is still lack of evidence whether vacuum deliver and C-section are safe for babies, stated Dr. Erika F. Werner, an obstetrician at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore (Reuters, 11/3/2011). The research conducted by Dr. Werner revealed that among 15,000 babies delivered with forceps, 0.12% had a seizure at birth. The C-section and vacuum delivery was at 0.3%. Beside seizure, babies are vulnerable to danger to nervous system when cold forceps are used at delivery.
