For Stroke Awareness Month, Dr. Andrew Satlin is Raising Awareness of the Connections Between Gum Disease and Stroke and Offers Encino, CA Laser Gum Surgery for Treatment

Encino, CA (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

Dr. Andrew Satlin offers patients with gum disease an alternative to painful scalpel surgery with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). May is Stroke Awareness Month, and Dr. Satlin is raising awareness about the connections between gum disease and stroke. Periodontal disease is one of the leading dental health concerns in the United States today, and is linked to an increased risk for strokes because of the high levels of bacteria found in the infected gum pockets.

Periodontal disease is essentially an infection of the gums. It starts out as basic plaque that builds up on the teeth and eventually forms into calculus or tartar. As this occurs, bacteria grow and begin to attack the surrounding gums. Patients will typically have red, painful gums, loose or shifting teeth (due to gum recession), chronic bad breath and even bleeding when brushing or flossing. Traditional scalpel surgery for gum disease is effective in combatting this problem, but is very invasive, painful and results in a percentage of healthy gum being removed in the process. Laser gum surgery is able to hone in on only the diseased tissue, thereby leaving a greater amount of gum tissue in the mouth.

LANAP is typically completed in two visits and requires no special therapy or procedures beforehand. Patients may receive a mild local anesthetic (vs. a general anesthetic, which is often administered for scalpel surgical methods). Then a small laser is inserted between the gum and the teeth to detect and remove only the diseased tissue. An ultrasonic scaler will remove any tartar from the root surface and then the laser is once again passed between the tooth and the gum to reduce further bacterial growth and stimulate the body’s stem cells to regenerate new bone (tooth root) and connective tissue. It also cauterizes the area and promotes fast healing. No incision is made, and there is no bleeding.

Removing this gum disease from the mouth can help to decrease a patient’s risk of stroke and other health issues that are related to periodontal disease. To learn more about the connections between gum disease and stroke, visit
