Florida Hospital and the Tampa Bay Lightning are Joining the Fight Against Breast Cancer and Raising Awareness

Florida Hospital is officially turning the Amalie Arena “pink” during the Tampa Bay Lightning home game on Saturday, October 17th to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. The puck drops at 7:00pm as the Bolts face-off against the Sabres. During the evening, Florida Hospital will encourage Lightning fans to join the Florida Hospital “Pink Army” and officially declare war on breast cancer. Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer according to the American Cancer Society.

“Florida Hospital is leading the way in breast health by offering the very latest in screening tools such as 2D and 3D Mammography and life-saving treatments. We all know that early detection is key, and we encourage women attending tonight’s game to take the first step and get screened. While one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, the survival rates are encouraging and continue to increase,” said Dr. Kimberly Apple, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel.

The Florida Hospital Pink Army began in 2010 to increase community awareness about early detection and prevention of breast cancer. Today, there are over 53,000 members across the state of Florida. The purpose is simple- to encourage women to join the Pink Army- get screened and donate. During the game on Breast Cancer Awareness night, coaches and broadcasters will wear pink ties to show their support. In addition, Dr. Kimberly Apple, who practices at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel will be interviewed on FOX’s Sun Sports pre-game show about new advances in early detection.

During the game, a public service announcement featuring Dr. Douglas Reintgen of Florida Hospital North Pinellas will air on the scoreboard. All fans attending the game will receive a free pink bolts t-shirt and enjoy the free Florida Hospital photo booth on the concourse that is filled with Lightning and pink props to create fun digital photos that can be used in social media to help spread the word. Fans will also be able to join the Pink Army and enter to win fun prizes including team autographed Tampa Bay Lightning pink hockey sticks.

“The Lightning are very happy to once again to collaborate with Florida Hospital to bring awareness to breast cancer research, as well as early detection and prevention,” said Steve Griggs, Tampa Bay Lightning CEO. “We’d like to thank Florida Hospital for continuing to be one of the Lightning’s top-tier community partners and for allowing Bolts fans the opportunity to join the Pink Army in the fight against breast cancer.”
