Delmar, NY (PRWEB) May 21, 2013

Third Generation Master Barber Greg Zorian is proud to announce the release of his first two barbering DVDs. These DVDs include content from the website. Whether viewers are enrolled barber school, cosmetology school or are current professionals, will no doubt benefit from the opportunity to learn from an experienced teacher and mentor.

Today’s modern men’s hairstyles have their roots in classic barbering from the 1920’s – 1960’s time period. In order to efficiently provide these haircuts, an excellent understanding of the basics of barbering is necessary. With the release of these DVDs students and professionals will become a master of the basics of barbering and be able to provide all of today’s popular hairstyles with confidence.

The first barber DVD in the series is titled “Barbering Basics”. The first section of this DVD covers everything one needs to know about the tools of the barber trade:

1.    Barber Shears: The barber shears are the most basic and important tool used in performing a finished men’s haircut. There are many different types and sizes of barber shears to choose from. In this lesson students will learn about all of the uses for the different types and sizes of barbering shears. Most importantly learn the correct way to hold the shears and proper body position for optimum haircutting efficiency.

2.    Clippers: Clipper cutting is the foundation for classic short and medium length men’s haircuts. Efficient clipper cutting takes advantage of three types of clippers: detachable blade clippers, adjustable clippers, and trimmers. Learn what each clipper is best suited for and why it is important to use all three in clipper cutting. Also learn how to extend the life of all clippers with the proper clipper maintenance techniques

3.    Barber Combs: One of the most important components of men’s haircutting is picking the hair up evenly when cutting. The comb is the tool used to perform this task. In this lesson one will learn about the different sizes and styles of barber combs and what each one is best used for. A new barber will be able to make a better decision on the numerous scissor cutting combs and clipper cutting combs available. Viewers will also learn how to keep their combs clean and sanitary for each of their customers.

Whether you are a student at a barber college, cosmetology school or a current professional, the next section of the “Barber Basics” DVD provides invaluable information on three basic men’s haircuts:

1.    “The Metro”: This haircut will teach students how to become proficient in the scissor over comb and scissor over finger men’s haircutting techniques. It will also teach students how to leave a natural hairline instead of leaving a hard square line on the back of the neck. Students will also learn some advanced texturizing techniques such as thinning shear over comb. This is one of the most popular hairstyle choices for young professionals. This customer should never look like he just walked out of the barbershop after his haircut.

2.    “The Prep School Taper”: The Prep School Taper is a modern day version of the Ivy League haircut that was popular in the 1940’s and 1950’s. It is a low maintenance and easy to style haircut. Learn how to blend out a fade using three different lengths on the sides without ever putting a line in. This is one of the most important things to learn in men’s haircutting. It will drastically increase haircutting efficiency.

3.    “The Flat Top”: The flat top is one of the most difficult haircuts to master. The objective is cutting a square shape on a round object. Learn how to break down the haircut in an easy to understand demonstration. Students will learn to become proficient in the blade on skin clipper cutting technique as well as the clipper over comb cutting technique. Learning the flat top haircut will also give students a better understanding of longer square shape men’s layer cuts and clipper cuts.

The second barber DVD from Greg Zorian is titled “Modern Barbering”. Barbering has moved into a very exciting and creative direction in recent times. Even though the title of this video is modern barbering it is a compilation of six haircuts that represent classic men’s haircuts from the 1920’s – 1960’s by famous movie stars, musicians, and athletes.

An interesting trend today is that these styles are all popular at the same time. A proficiency in all of the classic barbering techniques is a required skill in order to provide these exciting and stylish haircuts. The six men’s haircuts students will learn in this barber DVD are:

1.    “The Gentlemen’s Taper”: The Gentlemen’s Taper is one of the classic barber haircuts that has been popular for generations. This haircut is sometimes referred to as a regular haircut or the “Barbershop Regular”. It requires proficiency in the scissor over comb haircutting technique and the clipper over comb technique for tapering a natural hairline. There is a great example of this haircut worn by the actor John Slatterly on the popular TV show, “Mad Men”.

2.    “The Hollywood Fade”: The Hollywood Fade is a fun haircut and will challenge students' skills. It actually combines most of the barbering techniques including scissor over comb, thinning scissor over comb, clipper over comb, and fading. The haircut is a combination of a short fade with a longer messy top. A lot of young actors and musicians such as Justin Beiber and Ryan Seacrest are walking around in Hollywood with these stylish haircuts. Longer tops with very short sides are the “in” thing.

3.    “The Princeton”: The Princeton is a short and low maintenance haircut that was first made popular in the 1950’s. This is a great haircut for someone that does not want to put a lot of work into styling their hair. It is also great for young children with difficult cowlicks because stylists are basically cutting off the crown. It is necessary to be proficient with the clipper over comb blending technique to achieve the perfect finish. Most recently this haircut has been made very popular again by the actor Daniel Craig in the latest James Bond movie, “Skyfall”. As students learn how to cut hair, they will need to master this popular haircut.

4.    “The Pompadour”: The Pompadour is a hairstyle that represented and defined the decade of the 1950’s. This hairstyle was made famous by musicians such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. To be able to provide this haircut properly a barber will need to have an excellent understanding of graduation. In other words, it is necessary to master blending a natural hairline to the much longer top that this hairstyle requires. Barbers will also need to be proficient with a vent brush and hairdryer for styling the finish. Most recently, musician Bruno Mars rocked a retro 1950’s pompadour at the Grammy Awards.

5.    “The Modern Undercut”: The Undercut was a popular hairstyle that originated in the Prohibition Era of the 1920’s. The haircut worn by actor Michael Pitt from the TV show Boardwalk Empire is a great example. For this haircut it is necessary to be proficient with clipper cutting techniques and layering hair with scissors. Students will also need to have an understanding of the term disconnected. This means a haircut that is basically two different haircuts in one and do not blend together. Another great example of this haircut is famous soccer star and model David Beckham.

6.    “The Roaring 20’s Layer Cut”: The Roaring 20’s was a rebellious time that recent movies “Gangster Squad” and “The Great Gatsby” have glorified. All of the men were always dressed to perfection. Top hats and three piece suits were a must. This hairstyle is a longer layered haircut. Students will need to have an understanding of graduation, over direction, and square shape layering. Students will also need to understand the concept of a visual blend vs. a technical blend. Most recently actors such as Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Toby McGuire have worn this hairstyle on the big screen. is the industry leading educational resource for barbering education.
