Melville, NY (PRWEB) April 16, 2013
The law firm of Alonso Krangle LLP reports that the state and federal judges overseeing thousands of NuvaRing lawsuits have rescheduled the first trials in those NuvaRing litigations. According to a Case Management Order issued by the New Jersey Superior Court, Bergen County, on March 5th, the first NuvaRing trial will not begin until June 17, 2013. (Docket No. BER-L-3081-09 MT) Court documents filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Missouri, indicate that the first trial in the federal NuvaRing litigation has been rescheduled for October 2013. Court records indicate that well over 1,000 NuvaRing lawsuits are currently pending in the New Jersey state litigation, while several hundred have been filed in the federal NuvaRing litigation. NuvaRing lawsuits allege Merck & Co., Organon USA, Inc., and other defendants failed to provide adequate warnings regarding serious NuvaRing side effects, including a higher risk of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, compared to oral contraceptives. According to Alonso Krangle LLP, the first trials in both of these litigations could provide important clues as to how juries might weigh claims in similar NuvaRing lawsuits.
Since NuvaRing came on the market, a number of studies have pointed to an increased risk of blood clots and other cardiovascular problems associated with NuvaRing. For example, in October 2011, results from a large birth control study conducted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) revealed using NuvaRing increased the risk of blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, by 56% in comparison to older birth control pills. A second study, published on May 10, 2012 in the online edition of the British Medical Journal, found that NuvaRing users had a 6.5 times higher risk of experiencing a serious blood clot compared to women who did not use any form of hormonal birth control. The likelihood of experiencing a dangerous blood clot was 90% higher among users of the vaginal ring than it was for women taking combined oral contraceptives containing levonorgestrel, according to the study.
There is still time for women who may have been injured by NuvaRing, or their families, to file personal injury lawsuits seeking compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, emotional distress and other damages.
