Date:8/10/2009

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- VisionAWARE.org, a FREE not-for-profit online information center, has just added 55 downloadable Safety in the Home Guides to their comprehensive repertoire of resources. For professionals and community workers, the new Safety in the Home Guides are an important source of information that can be distributed at conferences, health fairs, and community events.

The Safety in the Home Guides are 1-2 page documents that contain easy-to-follow tips and hints for adjusting to life with vision loss. Whether it's staying active with leisure pursuits, managing everyday activities like personal care, food preparation, and getting around, or learning about eye health care, these "hint sheets" can provide ideas and solutions for many everyday living and safety needs.

The VisionAWARE.org downloadable Safety in the Home Guides are important for all professionals. Even those with limited training in vision rehabilitation may use them for the purposes of self-education and the education of their clients; ideal for inclusion in informational brochures, display in a waiting room or office and use as a staff training or radio reading program. Written in large print, they are a great tool for individuals with vision loss as well, who may use them to share and discuss information with spouses, family members and friends at their own pace and in their own time. The online hard-copy format produces easy-to-read paper printouts that can be compiled into a handy reference guide on how to successfully navigate daily living issues now and in the future.

Available at www.visionaware.org/download_resources, the 55 downloadable guides are made possible through a generous grant from the National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health. They are authored by Lisa-Anne Mowerson, a 29-year veteran in the field of vision impairment and the Assistant Chief at the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Center in the Veterans' Administration Connecticut Healthcare System.

Subject categories include:

  • Safe food preparation tips
  • Room-by-room safety hints
  • Safe household management
  • Safely navigating the indoor and outdoor world
  • Personal self care and medication management
  • General emergency procedures
  • Safe Outdoor Maintenance
  • Eye health education

  • And more. . .
