Feed Our Vets Utilizes the Bustle of Times Square to Heighten the Public’s Awareness About Hunger and Homelessness Among America’s Veterans

Utica, NY (PRWEB) March 18, 2013

Feed Our Vets, a nonprofit organization dedicated to stocking food pantries across the nation in the battle against hunger among U.S. Veterans, became part of the hustle and bustle of New York City’s Times Square March 9, setting up shop on Military Island to educate passers-by about the plight of hungry and homeless American Veterans.

Thousands of people went by the Feed Our Vets booth during the 11 hours it was set up in the midst of the pedestrian mall, with many stopping to lend encouragement and learn about ways they can help meet the needs of poverty-stricken Veterans and their families.

“The support for our Veterans in New York is just amazing,” said Richard Synek, the founder and Executive Director of Feed Our Vets, who staffed the booth along with volunteers from the organization’s food pantries.

“People who stopped by our display were really behind the idea of helping our Veterans in their times of need after all they’ve sacrificed for our country.”

In New York State alone there are more than one million Veterans, and more than 20,000 of them are homeless and hungry on any one night. In addition, it is estimated that more than 130,000 New York Veterans and their families do not have enough to eat at some point during the year. The numbers are similar across the country.

“A lot of Americans are aware of the struggle our vets face in readjusting to civilian life after war, and they are also aware that a lot of families in our country don’t have enough to eat,” said Synek. “What we heard on Saturday is that most folks haven’t put the two issues together. People just don’t realize that many Veterans, their spouses and children, are going hungry. When we connect the dots, there’s an outpouring of outrage and support.

Feed Our Vets operates two food pantries, in Utica and Watertown, and runs a mobile food pantry to help Veterans in underserved regions of upstate New York. The organization also works nationwide to make sure that Veterans have access to sufficient food for themselves and their families.

The Feed Our Vets team told New Yorkers that the small community of Utica is a great example of how easily Americans can make a difference in Veterans’ lives. Groups throughout the town - including scouts, sports teams, schools and even motorcycle clubs - regularly hold fundraisers and food drives to help Feed Our Vets accomplish its mission to see that no veteran goes hungry.

“The day in Times Square allowed us to tell New Yorkers that every little bit of help they give makes a very big difference in the lives of Veterans and their families,” Synek said.
