Rehabilitation of Offensive Lineman Utilizing Aquatic Therapy Following Syndesmotic Ankle Reconstruction – February 11, 2016

The syndesmosis might not be the topic of everyday discussion in most circles, but to physical therapists and athletic trainers who work with American football players, it’s a key body part. Located in the area of the high ankle, the syndesmosis helps join and stabilize the tibia and fibula with the ankle joint. Consequently, it’s very sensitive to trauma, especially trauma caused by twisting or rotating movements. For athletes on the gridiron, injuries to the syndesmosis, often referred to as high ankle injuries, are regularly seen. When those types of injuries require surgical interventions to repair damage, rehabilitation can take a long time if the athletes are relegated to only land-based physical therapy. Fortunately, the availability of advanced aquatic therapy equipment, such as warm-water therapy pools with integrated underwater treadmills, has given football players and their athletic trainers a new way to enhance syndesmotic injury rehabilitation.

A case study on this subject is the focus of an upcoming HydroWorx webinar, “Rehabilitation of Offensive Lineman Utilizing Aquatic Therapy Following Syndesmotic Ankle Reconstruction.” The one-hour event will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. E.S.T. Brian Lund, MS, ATC, LAT, Assistant Athletic Trainer for Football at the University of Wisconsin will lead the informative and fast-paced discussion. A large part of the webinar agenda will feature a comprehensive look at how aquatic therapy helped one of Lund’s Wisconsin football players come back after a series of ankle injuries that led to ankle reconstruction with a tight rope.

“Rehabilitation of Offensive Lineman Utilizing Aquatic Therapy Following Syndesmotic Ankle Reconstruction” will cover several topics, such as:

  •     The tools at the disposal of the sports medicine team at the University of Wisconsin, including their hydrotherapy equipment.
  •     The ways in which hydrotherapy has been successfully used to benefit the student athletes, including the football players, at the University of Wisconsin.
  •     An in-depth look at the case study of the football player who had syndesmotic ankle reconstruction surgery, including prognosis, surgical procedure, rehab exercises, post-recovery achievements and more.

“Rehabilitation of Offensive Lineman Utilizing Aquatic Therapy Following Syndesmotic Ankle Reconstruction” will conclude with a 15-20 minute discussion period where attendees of the seminar can ask questions of Lund.

Registration for this webinar is free, but registration must be made prior to the start of the program. Interested participants can conveniently register online.

Developing, Opening and Managing a Successful Aquatic Therapy Program – February 24, 2016

Deciding to add aquatic therapy to any senior living or physical therapy facility is a bold investment, and it needs to be pragmatically approached. On February 24, 2016, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. E.S.T., Regional Director of Athena Therapy in Ohio, Kathleen Kristoff, will present a webinar to tackle this topic.

“Developing, Opening and Managing a Successful Aquatic Therapy Program” is based on Kristoff’s own experiences. During the hour-long session, she will openly discuss several key aspects of how to profit through the addition of aquatic therapy. Some of the items she will present include:

  •     How the incorporation of an aquatic therapy program into an overall therapeutic approach can add a unique experience and environment suited to functional progression.
  •     Tips to create lasting policies and procedures for the daily operations and management of a therapy pool.
  •     Ideas for the necessary strategies and equipment that should be in place from day-one of aquatic therapy operations.
  •     How to effectively train staff on hydrotherapy, as well as marketing techniques to encourage referrals.
  •     How to meet and exceed regulatory guidelines and expectations when it comes to having an onsite therapy pool.

Anyone who is interested in learning more this topic can attend the live webinar, “Developing, Opening and Managing a Successful Aquatic Therapy Program” on February 24, 2016. However, advanced registration is required by visiting the HydroWorx website.
