Fauquier Health System Holds a Food Show with a Twist Long Term Care Patients Hold the Judge's Pen as Vendors Vie for Approval

WARRENTON, Va., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fauquier Health System of Warrenton, Virginia announces an innovative twist to a time honored process. Food service professionals are all too familiar with traveling to food shows where vendors offer attractively presented product samples in the hopes of winning a sale. Vernon Rhea, Director of Nutrition and Food Services, decided to apply the health sytem's long-standing commitment to individualized patient care to the selection of food. He arranged for a multiple vendor food show to come in-house and invited our long-term care residents and their families to attend. They were given score cards and instructed to rate the foods and comment on what they liked and disliked. The event was enthusiastically well-attended. Residents and their families took the exercise seriously as they tasted, took notes and tasted again throughout the afternoon. Foods included entrees, sides and desserts. Several foods that were no sugar, low fat could be used in several American Dietetic Association diets, helping to fulfill our commitment to a healthy community through healthy nutrition. Rhea says, "Our next step is to include the highest scoring items into the menu offerings. The event was so successful that there is no doubt that we will do it again."

Fauquier Health System President/CEO, Rodger Baker was enthusiastic about the new initiative.
