Family Dinner Expert and Cookbook Author Announces “Family Dinner Challenge”
Date:5/23/2013

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) May 23, 2013

Studies show that kids and teens who share family dinners three or more times per week are less likely to be overweight, less likely to engage in risky behaviors like drugs and alcohol, perform better academically, and have better relationships with their parents.

Despite its benefits, the family dinner is in danger, according to family dinner expert and advocate Aviva Goldfarb. Over the past 20 years, family dinners have declined by 33 percent. When families do eat together, average mealtimes last a mere 12 minutes.

Goldfarb is on a mission to change that. Ten years ago, she founded The Six O’Clock Scramble meal planning service to help busy families reconnect around the kitchen table over nourishing, delicious and easy to prepare meals. The company’s name refers to that time of night when busy parents find themselves staring into the refrigerator, wondering what to make for dinner as the kids are fighting, the dogs are barking and the phone is ringing.

This fall, she’s taking her commitment to a new level, with the recently announced Family Dinner Month in September and her online Family Dinner Challenge. Her goal is to get 10,000 families to commit to eating dinner together at least three times a week for four weeks between now and September - and she’ll provide complimentary resources to help parents succeed. This project coincides with The Scramble's 10 year anniversary this summer.

Goldfarb developed The Scramble out of necessity. “When I first had kids, I wanted to make healthy family dinners a priority but I found the whole process daunting and stressful. After lots of trial and error, and some tearful consults with my mom, I developed a simple system to make it easy for busy parents to get homemade dinners on the table, even if they work outside the home at intense jobs and their kids have lots of after school activities.”

The Scramble is a membership-based meal planning service. Each week, “Scramblers” receive a suggested, seasonal meal plan, complete with family-tested, healthy recipes, side dish recipes and an organized shopping list. Members also get tips on healthy family eating and related topics.

For most families, dinnertime is when parents and kids can all be in the same room at the same time and Goldfarb’s busy family is no exception. “Dinnertime is often the ONLY time we can disconnect from technology and connect with each other around real conversations. I want to help more families make those vital connections.”
