FRC Deplores House Vote to Fund Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON, July 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the House of Representatives voted down an amendment offered by Representative Mike Pence (R-Ind.) that would have prevented family planning funds under the Health and Human Services appropriations bill from going to Planned Parenthood. The amendment was to be attached to the $730.5 billion Labor/Health and Human Services appropriations legislation. Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest abortion organization, and made over $1 billion last year and performs over 300,000 abortions per year.

"It's despicable that once again Congress has voted to fund this deadly organization," said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, "The vast majority of Americans do not want taxpayers dollars going to abortion organizations. Planned Parenthood has been complicit in statutory rape cases, mishandled funds, and accepted donations for abortions with offensive racial overtones. Federal funding of such a scandalized organization is a disgrace."

"In addition, the appropriations legislation passed by Congress allows federal funding for controversial needle exchange programs and denies funding to abstinence programs. It appears the federal government is in the business of encouraging bad behavior."
