FDA Says Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacements Can Cause Soft-Tissue Damage, Rottenstein Law Group Reports

(PRWEB) January 20, 2013

On the heels of its proposal to tighten regulation of medical devices, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced that metal-on-metal hip replacements, such as the Wright Conserve, can cause soft-tissue damage and pain, reports The Rottenstein Law Group, which is monitoring these developments very closely.

“I’m encouraged by the increased attention the FDA has placed on metal-on-metal hip implants such as the Wright Conserve,” said Rochelle Rottenstein, principal of the Rottenstein Law Group. “Recipients of these devices put their trust into manufacturers and the regulatory system, and deserve some relief.”

Metal-on-metal hip implants were supposed to be more durable than previous ceramic and plastic forms, but over time have been shown to fail at high rates and cause severe patient discomfort, the FDA said, according to a Reuters article published yesterday. In addition, according to the FDA, the metal components can erode against each other from use. This wear and tear can damage the bone and soft tissue surrounding the implant.

The Rottenstein Law Group maintains a Wright Conserve Hip Lawsuit Information Center that provides updates on Wright Conserve lawsuits and information about the device’s side effects, and tips on the next steps in the process toward evaluating whether Wright hip replacement recipients should file a lawsuit.

For a comprehensive list of all metal-on-metal hip lawsuits, including devices from manufacturers such as DePuy, Stryker and Wright, visit the Rottenstein Law Group's Hip Replacement Lawsuits web site.
