There are more than two million North Americans who have T1DM and more than twice as many with insulin dependent T2DM. In T2DM, insulin-secreting beta cell mass is already reduced by 50% at the time of diagnosis and continues to decline throughout the course of the disease. Patients with a significant loss of beta cell mass are totally dependent on injected insulin. Insulin therapy poses substantial challenges including danger of life threatening low blood sugar levels.
