Los defensores de la mujer hablan de disparidades e instan a los grupos de socorro a que tengan en cuenta las necesidades especiales

Washington, D.C.(Vocus) January 24, 2010 -- La experiencia tras otros desastres del pasado indica que probablemente las mujeres y los niños en Haití no estén recibiendo una proporción justa de la enorme ayuda de socorro que está llegando al país después del terremoto de la semana pasada, afirman expertos en salud pública de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS).

"Me perturban profundamente las imágenes en los medios difusión que muestran a los haitianos en fila y recibiendo ayuda, y que sean todos hombres” dijo la Dra. Marijke Velzeboer-Salcedo, la principal experta de la OPS/OMS en cuestiones relativas al género. “Estamos viendo imágenes en los periódicos y en la televisión con solo hombres o con una mayoría de hombres, parados o avanzando en las filas para recibir alimentos o agua. No podemos dejar de preguntarnos, ¿dónde están las mujeres? ¿Han todas ellas encomendado su supervivencia a sus hombres? ¿Sabemos que los recursos están siendo compartidos por igual por estos hombres y otros miembros de sus familias?”

Las mujeres y los niños son especialmente vulnerables después de un desastre, subrayan Velzeboer-Salcedo y otros expertos. Esto es especialmente cierto en Haití, donde las tasas de violencia contra las mujeres y las niñas ya eran elevadas antes del '/>"/>
