Emerging Trends in Cosmetic Dentistry Win Feedback from Dental Professional Warren Melamed
Date:5/27/2013

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) May 27, 2013

Through his many years of service in dental health, Warren Melamed has witnessed much advancement in the world of cosmetic dentistry. From braces to teeth whitening, many new technologies and practices have allowed patients to not only fix dental issues, but also improve the appearance of their teeth. Although many of these innovations have proven beneficial to individual’s oral health and appearance, Warren Melamed notes a few trends highlighted in a recent Hive Health Media article may be “pushing the boundaries too far.”

One example is the growing popularity of teeth jewelry and “grills.” The article explains, “Across North America, a growing trend is the use of teeth jewelry. Small glass crystals, made of white gold or gold jewels, are bonded to the enamel of your teeth and made to look like sparkling diamonds. If properly applied by a dental professional, the jewels are harmless to your tooth and can stay on for up to six months. Celebrities like Pink have been seen wearing these subtle smile accessories at red carpet events.”

While dental accessories have gained popularity, Warren Melamed warns that they may not always prove as great for the actual oral health of the individual wearing them. He states, “Although the ADA has not conducted any thorough studies on the long-term use of teeth jewelry or ‘grills,’ it is important to look at the materials these products are made of. Some metals may prove abrasive to enamel and others—especially ‘grills’—could trap in bacteria and encourage more rapid rates of tooth decay.”

Not all emerging trends are necessarily pointed in the wrong direction, according to Warren Melamed. For instance, the article reveals, “The latest anti-aging treatment doesn’t involve harmful face injections or risky surgery. Experts in neuromuscular dentistry have designed dentures that re-align your jaw and facial muscles to give the appearance of a younger, wrinkle-free face. FaceLift Dentures are available in select dentist offices across North America.”

Melamed responds to the advent of “FaceLift Dentures” and notes, “While these multi-purpose dentures may help aging patients kill two birds with one stone, it is important for the patient to do what he or she believes is comfortable. Some may find that the use of these dentures is not always as comfortable as traditional resources.”

According to Melamed, the article features other interesting trends that may prompt greater oral hygiene and care among patients. For instance, tooth regeneration—although still in its initial phases of development—may allow patients to eventually benefit from a new alternative to traditional dental crowns. “There are many intriguing and exciting developments happening in cosmetic—and general—dentistry. However, those who are curious about new practices or treatments should carefully review options with a trusted dentist and check with relevant information provided by the ADA,” Warren Melamed concludes.
