Ellex to Preview New Multi-Color Photocoagulation Laser at AAO
Date:11/3/2008

ADELAIDE, Australia, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Ellex Medical Lasers Limited (ASX:ELX), a global leader in the design and manufacture of ophthalmic laser and ultrasound systems, today announced that it will preview a new, multi-color photocoagulation laser, Integre Pro(TM), at the upcoming American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), November 8-11, 2008 in Atlanta.

Featuring high-power yellow and red wavelengths, the Integre Pro sets a new standard for multi-color photocoagulation. The combination of two optimal wavelengths and high power not previously available in photocoagulators -- 1.5 watts of 561nm yellow wavelength and 1 watt of 670nm red -- permits the full treatment range of three-wavelength photocoagulators, displacing the need for green wavelengths.

Compared to traditional 514/532nm green wavelengths, the Integre Pro's 561nm yellow wavelength creates a more gentle retinal burn and results in low scotoma formation. This, in turn, provides for better control over the interaction between laser beam and tissue. The yellow wavelength is not absorbed by xanthophyll, which makes it ideal for treatments in and around the macula. It also produces less scatter, which creates superior transmission through existing opacities, including cataracts. The high power permits iridotomies and laser trabeculoplasties.

The 670nm red wavelength of the Integre Pro is ideal for transmission through minor hemorrhages, and it is well absorbed by the retinal pigment epithelium and choroidal melanocytes. The results are gentle, deep retinal tissue penetration and effective treatment of choroidal vessels.

Additional Innovations

Other Integre Pro innovations to be previewed at the AAO include complete, cable-free integration of the laser with the slit lamp, a second port for easy adaptation of a second delivery device, and a proprietary single-pump dual cavity design that allows for instant switching between wavelengths.
