Representative Alma Wheeler-Smith, a Pinnacle judge, observed: "Identifying and celebrating innovative programs is an exciting way to drive creative practices in the rest of the industry and having read the many submissions from around the state, it is clear that Michigan's plans are moving in the right direction."

The Pinnacle Awards include an award to recognize outstanding providers of diabetes care: Innovations in Diabetes Health Care. This year's award was presented to Walker Family Clinic in Grand Rapids. A new category was initiated this year for providers, Childhood Weight Reduction. The University of Michigan Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools received this award for its project, Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools Nutrition and Physical Activity Program.

"The entries in the provider categories this year demonstrate that practitioners are innovative and creative in meeting today's health challenges. Our winners this year increased treatment compliance and improved health outcomes for patients with critical health issues. I hope that others use these best practices as models for their own programs," observed Pinnacle judge, Julie Griffith, Director of Quality Management at PHP-Mid-Michigan.

The MAHP Pinnacle Awards for Best Practices was created in 2001 to document the innovative change and quest for measurable quality improvement among Michigan managed care plans. The awards currently are awarded under the auspices of the MAHP Foundation. In 2004, for the first time, the MAHP Foundation expanded the awards to include the provider community.

The 2007 programs can be reviewed in the Pinnacle Awards 2007 booklet available from MAHP and on the MAHP Web site: http://www.mahp.org/publications/pinnacle.htm. A detailed look at each submission is available in Pinnacle Clinical Submissions: 2007, available in PDF at the same URL.
