Small businesses need to sound big when it comes to their phone systems, but they don’t always have the big-business budgets needed for a multi-featured, robust system. A new crop of small business phone systems from brands like AT&T, XBlue and RCA have come to the rescue, costing a fraction of their grown-up counterparts.
But beware, says Tim Brown, Easy On Hold founder and technical director; not all small business phones are created equal, especially when it comes to music on hold features. “Custom music and messaging on hold makes a small business sound big—but if the phone itself restricts your ability to choose what your callers hear, you’ll present a poor image of your business every time you hit the hold button,” he says.
“AT&T has designed a really great new phone system for small businesses,” says Brown. The SB67138, also called the Syn-J, is a 4-line phone offering features such as longer-range wireless handsets, 3-way conferencing and push to talk technology.
“What I really like about this simple but sophisticated phone system is that it provides a music on hold jack with no need for an outside adapter—this is the first time a 4-line analog phone can directly intercept a music on hold player,” says Brown. “This represents a big savings to small businesses who need custom on hold messaging but don’t like to spend an average $350 extra on an adapter. We’re really happy with AT&T’s product here.”
Easy On Hold created a video to showcase the AT&T Syn-J music on hold setup. “If you’re a small business looking for an inexpensive phone system under $500, this would be a good option. We’ll help you create a custom on hold message and the right player to easily plug into it,” Brown says.
Brown says he also gives high ratings to XBlue X16, a more souped-up small business phone system with up to 6 lines for up to 24 employees. Like the AT&T Syn-J, it does not require a music on hold adapter—the music on hold player plugs right into the system.
“The XBlue has terrific features like call waiting, call forwarding, live recordings of phone calls and caller ID. But my favorite feature is the automated attendant that will capture incoming calls with a greeting, then hold the call or pass it on to the desired extension,” Brown says. “That feature alone, combined with a custom on hold message, helps any business sound polished. Easy On Hold can provide the recordings for both the auto attendant and the on hold.”
The newcomer and biggest disappointment to the arena, Brown says, is the RCA 25825 Visys 8-Line system. “RCA is infamous for its annoying beeps that cannot be turned off,” says Brown, “and we had high hopes that with this new model, the problem would go away. Unfortunately, despite the bells and whistles in this new model, RCA had a chance to get the music on hold right and they blew it."
Unlike the AT&T Syn-J and XBlue, Brown explains, the RCA system has no music on hold input; instead, users are forced to choose one of two on hold options: silence on hold with beeps or an unpleasant music track imbedded in the system.
"We've heard hundreds of complaints over the years from RCA phone owners who desperately want to eliminate the beeps," Brown says. "Hopefully in the next round of product releases they'll get it right."
