Date:12/4/2007

CHICAGO, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded a $55,000 grant to the Ohio Department of Health. The grant will fund coalitions in Cleveland and Toledo to promote healthy indoor air and asthma programs in their schools.

The coalitions are the Greater Cleveland Asthma Coalition, currently a branch of the American Lung Association of Ohio, and the Northwest Ohio Asthma Coalition. Both coalitions have done extensive work to improve conditions for asthma sufferers.

The coalitions will use EPA's Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools, Healthy School Environmental Assessment Tool, Integrated Pest Management, Clean School Bus and School Chemical Cleanout Program as resources to improve school air quality.

"EPA is concerned about the health and welfare of children and adults who suffer from asthma," said Regional Administrator Mary A. Gade. "This grant will help the Ohio Department of Health improve the quality of life for students and teachers at Ohio's schools."

Information about EPA's indoor air quality program is at http://www.epa.gov/iaq/ia-intro.html. Information about asthma is at http://www.epa.gov/iaq/asthma/about.html.
