DrugRisk Update: Bayer Discloses $500 Million Remaining for Yaz Lawsuits

Denver, CO (PRWEB) March 13, 2013

The birth control resource center at is alerting women who have taken the contraceptives Yaz or Yasmin of new information on the site showing drug maker Bayer has spent around $1 billion so far to settle Yaz lawsuits, and has reserved a remaining $500 million to resolve new claims.

“The goal of DrugRisk is to improve the safety of those taking prescription drugs by publishing the latest warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. Informed patients can discuss concerns with their doctor and decide if they need legal advice,” explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer.

The resource center has reported that thousands of patients have filed a Yaz lawsuit, which have been consolidated to a special federal Multi-District Litigation court in Illinois. The case is known as Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100, Southern District Illinois).

Injury claims came after studies from the British Medical Journal and FDA warned that birth control pills containing the hormone drospirenone, such as Yaz and Yasmin, can increase the risk of blood clots, DVT and pulmonary embolism by as much as 74%.*

DrugRisk has uncovered the latest financial reports from Bayer, which show the company faces Yaz lawsuits from as many as 13,600 claimants.** Bayer also disclosed they have spent around $1 billion so far to settle nearly 4,800 patient claims for blood clot injuries like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism.**

Now, the resource center has learned that Bayer had set aside a total of $1.5 billion to resolve Yaz lawsuits, of which $500 million still remains to settle claims which are still pending or have yet to be filed.*** This is positive news for patients who have suffered blood clot injuries but have not filed a case.

Anyone who suffered a blood clot, DVT, stroke or Pulmonary Embolism after taking Yaz or Yasmin is urged to contact the Drug Risk Resource Center or speak with a lawyer about their legal options.

Due to the specialized nature of federal MDL drug injury litigation, DrugRisk cautions that patients should seek a lawyer with experience in defective drug litigation, and only recommends lawyers and law firms who have already settled Yaz lawsuits.
