Driving Safety Tips for the Long Weekend from

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) May 17, 2013

No matter where you are heading to enjoy the long weekend, there are some important things to keep in mind on the road. Driving safely and ensuring both your car and your insurance are ready for the unexpected can prevent a disaster that could ruin your getaway.

A Safe Car Means a Safe Trip

Before any road trip, it’s important to make certain that the vehicle is in top shape and ready to go. Make sure to take care of any scheduled maintenance including oil changes and brake pads so that you don’t face a breakdown on the road – or worse, an accident as a result of a problem with the car. Check tire pressure, fluid levels, and of course, the gas gauge before you go.

It’s also a good idea to make sure the car is equipped with everything you need in case of a roadside emergency. This includes a spare tire and jack, first aid kit, and non-perishable food and water in case you’re stuck on the side of the road for a while. When shopping around for car insurance quotes, be sure to ask about roadside assistance that can provide the help you need in an emergency. If you don’t currently have it, it’s a good idea to see about adding it before you leave for the long weekend; it’s among the cheapest car insurance options you can add and one of the most valuable when you need it.

Stay Alert on the Road

Long weekends can mean some extra traffic on the road, so stay alert and pay careful attention when driving. Keep the cell phone put away – talking and texting are illegal and very dangerous. Check your directions before you go, use a hands-free navigation device, or have someone else navigate for you; looking at directions or maps while driving takes your eyes off the road.

Drinking and driving becomes an increased danger during long weekends when many people are attending gatherings where drinking takes place. Be on the lookout for any other drivers who appear to be under the influence. If you see such a driver, keep your distance and notify police if possible. And don’t get behind the wheel yourself or let anyone else drive after drinking; sober driving saves lives.

Watch Out for Construction

Construction season is upon us, so remember when you are heading out for the long weekend to watch out for construction zones. Slow down when you see orange cones or construction signs ahead and proceed with caution. Be sure to follow all posted signs including the instructions of flaggers, and be extra careful where workers are on the road.

Speeding in a construction zone can come with an even higher fine than a regular speeding ticket, and it can really hurt you when shopping for car insurance quotes and prevent you from getting the cheapest car insurance. The same goes for any failure to obey construction zone signs; be safe and careful, and keep your insurance rates down at the same time.

Safe driving and extra caution can help to prevent the car accidents that are all too common on a long weekend. With these precautions, you can arrive and return safely and enjoy every minute of your long weekend getaway.
