Drexel University's Eleventh Street Health Services Recognized as National Model of Innovative Health Care
Date:11/4/2009

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Sixty-one-year old Joanne Bogan is being treated for two strokes, hypertension and diabetes. Lisa Scardigli is 43 years old, and living with multiple sclerosis. Both are healthier today thanks to Drexel's Eleventh Street Family Health Services and its innovative model of care. The ground-breaking story of Eleventh Street and its patients is being told in a video released today by the Center to Champion Nursing in America, a joint initiative of AARP, the AARP Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

"The Center to Champion Nursing in America is committed to building a nursing workforce to meet the needs of all Americans," said Brenda Cleary, PhD, RN, FAAN, Director of the Center to Champion Nursing in America. "Eleventh Street is a model of what nurse-led care can do for people, combining community-based and interdisciplinary care, and fully embracing primary, preventive and chronic care management. Moreover, what sets Eleventh Street apart is the backing of a university committed to providing clinical nursing education in settings where Americans are more likely to receive care -- out of the hospital and in the community."

Eleventh Street is the first nurse-managed health center in the U.S. built from the ground up. Care is provided by an integrated team of nurse practitioners, social workers, nutritionists, physical therapists, psychologists and dentists. In addition to examination rooms, the facility houses a fitness center with trainers, a teaching kitchen, dental clinic, and an outdoor garden where teens grow vegetables for the neighborhood.

"You're not an illness, you're an individual," said Bogan
