Dr Sam Speron reveals thoughts on Breast cancer & Angelina Jolie.

Breast cancer is the most frequently occurring cancer and is the second most prominent cause of death for women all over the world. Breast cancer has been a major health concern for women all over the world. This disease is not exclusive to women; men can also develop breast cancer as well. In society today, magazine stands have been lined with covers publicizing stories about breast cancer. The whole month of October has become a seasonal reminder and dedication to breast cancer awareness.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that begins in the cells of the breasts. This is a collection of cancer cells that can grow into surrounding tissues and can spread to distant areas of the body. There are multiple factors that can be a risk for breast cancer such as inherited genetic mutations, family history of breast cancer, age and specifically for women, menstrual history, breast feeding history and late pregnancy. Studies continue to discover lifestyle factors and habits that alter breast cancer risk for instance obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption.

Gratefully in the age that we currently live in, there are sufficient screening technologies including digital mammograms and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that aid in the detection of breast cancer before it starts to cause symptoms.

“It is important to have the knowledge of this disease as well as who is at greatest risk. Having these facts can help prevent the premature loss of those who love and care for us,” notes Dr. Sam Speron, breast plastic surgeon and consumer advocate. “Breast cancer reconstruction should be offered to most women undergoing breast cancer surgery although not all of them are candidates for reconstruction.”

The one reason breast cancer gets more than its fair share of attention in the media today is due to the countless efforts of breast cancer activists and celebrities who themselves have announced publicly their own fight and struggle for the disease. One of the more known celebrities, Angelina Jolie, recently announced that she made a choice to have a double mastectomy due to a genetic screening test. This test determined that she is carrying a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which increases her risks of developing ovarian or breast cancer. Jolie’s doctors explained that due to this genetic mutation, they estimated that she had a 50% risk of ovarian cancer and 87% risk of breast cancer. Mastectomy is surgery to remove the entire breast. All of the breast tissue is removed, sometimes along with other nearby tissues. In Angelina Jolie’s case, this procedure will help lower her risk to less than 5%.

“Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy," Jolie stated to the media. Her aunt and mother had passed away after being diagnosed with breast cancer due to this same genetic mutation. Angelina Jolie was impelled by a desire to encourage other women to get genetically tested and raise awareness of the options available to those at risk.

“Being one of the most admired celebrities in the world, publicizing this news may have encouraged other women to stand up and do the same,” added board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sam Speron. “Breast reconstruction can help restore the look and feel of the breast after a mastectomy. Although a reconstructed breast may not match the look or feel of your natural breast, it can help you feel more comfortable about the way you look.”

Dr. Speron is the founder and medical director of Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery. He is board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and an active member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS).
