Around the Corner Dental Health Spa and Dr. Kanani offer free consultation to his first time patients to help them get a better understanding of their oral health. Although many dental patients believe that flossing will prevent tooth decay, the real purpose is more complicated. Essentially, says a cosmetic dentist in Woodland Hills (Dr. Kaveh Kanani), flossing is a barrier between the patient and gum disease, which can lead to loose or damaged teeth. After teeth fall out, he says, it's time for dental implant costs.

What is concerning about the misunderstanding, in keeping with a November 22, 2012 article by the Daily Mail of the United Kingdom (“Is Flossing Your Teeth A Waste of Time?...”), is that patients who brush and floss may be disappointed by instances of tooth decay. This can lead them to think that flossing is especially a waste of time, when in reality, flossing done properly can keep tooth bacteria from turning into gum disease. Since gum disease can take many months (or years) to develop, the long-term effects of neglecting flossing or brushing can keep patients from seeing the loss of progress.

While the book Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye may be helpful in some respects, says Dr. Kanani, it may give the wrong impression to dental patients who read it quickly. (For instance, the book's phrase “not every tooth with decay necessarily needs a filling” is true, but patients without dental knowledge may not know the difference between a tooth that does and does not need a filling.) Essentially, according to the Daily Mail, Dr. Ellie Phillips of “Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye” maintains that tooth decay is not at all reduced by flossing.

While technically correct, says Dr. Kanani, this may give the overall impression that flossing is useless. Nothing could be further from the truth, since oral health is about much more than visible tooth decay. The dentist Woodland Hills says that tooth decay is certainly linked with acid and bacteria buildup, which eats into more than just enamel. Bacteria also grow into the plaque that leads to bleeding, sore gums, which can lead to gum disease, which almost inevitably leads to the cost of dental implants.

Woodland Hills dentist Dr. Kanani does agree with Christina Chatfield, a dental hygienist quoted in the Daily Mail, who says that bad flossing can be quite useless. (“The majority of those who do use floss [which I believe to be around five per cent of the population], don’t use it effectively, so it is of minimal benefit to them".) Many flossers do not realize that the point of flossing is not specifically to get rid of bits of food, but to hook around the teeth in order to get out plaque from the areas where brushes don't reach.

It is also quite true that foods other than those high in sugar can cause dental issues. Sucking on lemons, or having a high content of acidic drinks, can do more damage to teeth than eating sweets – because the acid is entering the mouth ready-made for tooth damage, instead of being converted from sugar into acid.

While twice daily brushing does do a lot to prevent tooth decay (such as cavities) from beginning, this only covers around 60% of the surface of teeth, whereas much tooth damage occurs in gaps or below the surface. Flossing and brushing can be compared to the dynamic duo of diet and exercise, with mouthwash as the high-power cardio workout for oral health. However, says Dr. Kanani, sometimes the mouth is already damaged, and this calls for more drastic action than either one of those three oral care methods. He offers a monthly special of implants and sedation techniques for under $400 to help patients with the cost of regaining oral health.

Dr. Kaveh Kanani gained a biology degree via California State University, and a doctorate on the other side of the country at New York University. After furthering his education with a series of AAID MaxiCourses®, Dr. Kanani was made an associate at facilities in southern California, such as the West Los Angeles Dental Health Institute, and also at South Bay Dental. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), which is recognized by American courts as reliable, gave him the award of an Associate Fellowship.
