Along with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, obesity can also be a risk factor for gum disease, according to a February 6, 2013 article posted in General Dentistry and in PR Newswire (“Being Overweight Linked to Higher Risk of Gum Disease”). Bacteria buildup can lead to a seemingly endless cycle of inflammation and then gum disease, because a certain type of cytokines are produced just by having gum disease. In some ways, it's as if the body sets itself on a course of failure unless drastic measures are taken.
