Dr. Kanani, Woodland Hills Dentist: Links Between Gum Disease, Obesity and Inflammation
Date:5/16/2013

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

Along with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, obesity can also be a risk factor for gum disease, according to a February 6, 2013 article posted in General Dentistry and in PR Newswire (“Being Overweight Linked to Higher Risk of Gum Disease”). Inflammation is the culprit, says quoted dentist and author Charlene Krejci. Dr. Kaveh Kanani, a cosmetic dentist in Woodland Hills, says that research like this can be a powerful motivator for both weight loss and dental visits, so that dental implant costs can be avoided.

Excess sitting can lead to both inflammation and extra weight, according to a February 21, 2013 article posted by WebMD (“Too Much Sitting Linked to Chronic Health Problems”). However, the PR Newswire article goes beyond the dangers of sitting for hours at a time, indicating that the cytokines, or “proteins with inflammatory properties”, are actually produced “relentlessly” by the bodies of overweight individuals. Essentially, says Dr. Kanani, this means that there can be unintentional blood flow damage to a person's gums by the double problem of having extra weight that encourages extra sitting.

Nor is weight the worst problem, says the dentist Woodland Hills. Bacteria buildup can lead to a seemingly endless cycle of inflammation and then gum disease, because a certain type of cytokines are produced just by having gum disease. In some ways, it's as if the body sets itself on a course of failure unless drastic measures are taken. Sometimes, once the gums begin to separate from the teeth (or teeth begin to get wobbly), the gaps may make it necessary to incur dental implant cost.

According to a sobering April 12, 2013 article on Diabetes Care (“Inflammation Links Obesity and Gum Disease”), belly fat itself may be a large problem for those who want to retain their original teeth. “Belly fat contains about 50 bioactive substances, which can set off inflammatory responses that reduce the body’s ability to suppress appetite or use insulin to regulate glucose levels—both of which are linked to diabetes.” Fat itself, no matter where it is stored, can increase a protein that has been linked to both inflammation and cardiovascular disease.

Of course, losing weight can improve health overall, but people can fear going to the dentist as much (or more) as they may fear going through another diet and exercise program. Dr. Kanani offers sedation procedures, in which the patient can either be asleep or semi-aware for the dental process, for a monthly special of under $400. Dental implants are also available for a reduced rate.

Dr. Kaveh Kanani has a biology degree from California State University, and a doctorate in Dental Surgery from New York University. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry awarded him with an Associate Fellowship, and Dr. Kanani built on his knowledge by taking multiple AAID Maxi courses. After becoming an associate of the Southern California Family Dentistry, and South Bay Dental, he opened his own office in 2001.
